Independent Living Services (formerly Outreach Ministry in Burnside) acts as a family to more than 80 individuals with disabilities. Our primary goal is to help our members live independently with as much stability, dignity and comfort as possible.
Our members are disabled with mental illness, dementia, brain injuries, developmental disabilities, addictions, or a combination of these. Many of our members have little or no contact with their families. Most of them are very poor. All of them need help with their affairs so they can live independently.
We manage money, advocate with government agencies, navigate the complex social service system, help find and maintain housing, assist with medications, schedule doctors' appointments, and provide assistance with many areas of personal care.
We celebrate birthdays and holidays together, arrange outings, and share with our members their daily joys and struggles. In some cases, we're able to get and stay in touch with their families. Most of our members stay with us for life, so eventually we arrange hospice care when needed and hold memorial services.
Members have good reasons for being part of our program. They tell us they like the activities and outings. They don't have to worry because they know responsible, efficient people are handling their affairs. They appreciate the hugs and friendship that are part of Independent Living Services. Our office is a place where they are known and loved for who they are.
